Wayne Rooney makes blunt Leeds United point after one-sided Elland Road clash

Plymouth Argyle had six defeats in seven road matches this season.

Wayne Rooney expects Leeds United to compete for automatic promotion this season. The former Manchester United striker made the revelation after his Plymouth Argyle side was easily defeated at Elland Road today.

The Pilgrims were absolutely overpowered, unable to register a single shot on goal in a one-sided Championship affair in which the Whites controlled nearly 79% of possession. The visitors deployed an ultra-defensive strategy but eventually had no answer for United. Daniel James, Joel Piroe, and Brenden Aaronson scored three goals in eight first-half minutes, thus sealing Argyle’s destiny.

Pilgrims head coach Rooney, who has taken his fair share of criticism from the home fans, stated: “Leeds are a good team, difficult to play against. We are striving to improve. We have new lads coming in, and it’s a good vibe in a large club.

“I’m sure if you ask their manager, anything less than promotion for Leeds would be a disaster. I’m sure that is the message he is receiving. Without a doubt, they will be one of the teams competing for the top two spots.

Argyle has now lost six of its seven away matches this season. They have the worst away record in the English Football League, scoring only once on the road. United manager Daniel Farke changed things up in the closing quarter of the game, introducing teenagers Sam Chambers and Charlie Crew. Joshua Guilavogui, a new addition, also made his first appearance for Farke’s team.
