Sheffield Wednesday star performer now in danger of missing Sheffield United clash

The Steel City derby is looming on the horizon as Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United look to claim the first set of footballing bragger’s rights in the city for over seven years.

Both teams will play two more league games before the encounter, with Wednesday also having to travel to London for a Carabao Cup fixture against Brentford on Tuesday, before the Bramall Lane clash on Sunday, November 10. The Owls have two home games against Watford and Norwich City, while the Blades will travel to Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City.
It comes at a time when yellow card bans are becoming more common in the EFL, and the Owls’ players may need to tread carefully in the coming games if they want to avoid missing the trip to Bramall Lane. If a player in the English Football League receives five yellow cards before the 19th match of the season, they will be suspended for one game.
Di’Shon Bernard, Wednesday’s in-form centre-back, received his fourth yellow card in their comeback victory over Portsmouth on Friday evening, ruling him out of the Norwich encounter if he gets penalized against Watford – and the derby if his next yellow card comes against the Canaries. So far this season, Bernard has one yellow card for every 225 minutes of professional football.

Yan Valery is the only other Wednesday player who could miss the derby due to his yellow card ban. The Owls’ latest signing has three yellow cards and will miss the next two league games if he is booked. A few other Owls players are on two yellows.

The Owls defeated Pompey, extending their winning streak to six games with one defeat. Manager Danny Röhl has expressed satisfaction with their performance direction, but is well aware of the fragility of league place during such a hectic time of fixtures, emphasizing the importance of continuing their efforts.

“I mentioned this before,” he said. “What matters is the performance. All of our games since QPR have been winnable, which is encouraging. If we accomplish this in the coming weeks, we will be able to maintain or improve our position; otherwise, we will fall behind. For me, performance is more important right now than table place.”
