On Saturday afternoon, Sunderland played Oxford United in the Championship at the Stadium of Light. A number of talking points came out of the match.

After Wednesday’s thrilling victory over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, Régis Le Bris’ team began and ended the day at the top of the league.

Wilson Isidor and Jobe’s goals gave the Black Cats a resounding victory over Oxford United, increasing their advantage at the top of the Championship to five points.

Here, however, we examine the unexpected events that you could have missed during Sunderland vs. Oxford United’s Championship match at the Stadium of Light:

Sunderland delivered a blow to the shock injury.

When it was announced at 2:00 pm that goalie Anthony Patterson would miss the match due to an injury, Sunderland supporters were taken aback.

The Academy of Light graduate went down multiple times during Sunderland’s most recent encounter against Luton Town, but he managed to finish the entire ninety minutes plus an additional seven minutes of stoppage time. He seemed to be in the wars. Simon Moore, whose sole prior club appearance was in the Carabao Cup against Preston North End earlier this season, took Patterson’s spot in Le Bris’ starting lineup.

Following the release of the team news, Sunderland’s social media outlets provided an eight-word explanation. “Anthony Patterson misses today’s game due to injury,” was the message on their social media post.Fortunately, though, Le Bris acknowledged following the match that the problem wasn’t serious. Naturally, Moore went on to maintain a clean sheet throughout the match.

Sprinklers halt play.

In a pretty strange incident, Oxford United was on the offensive when the Stadium of Light sprinklers stopped play in the first minute of the match.

Des Buckingham made lighthearted remarks about the incident after the match, while Dan Neil told the media that they had wet him.

More concerns about double injuries

Despite Sunderland’s near-perfect performance against Oxford United, there were still two more injury concerns during the match.

Dane Scarlett clattered Luke O’Nien, the captain of Sunderland, during the second half. With just fifty minutes remaining, fans were concerned about the fan favorite when the central defender was floored for a number of minutes.

When the Black Cats’ physio was called in, things didn’t seem promising at first. O’Nien, however, got back up after a few minutes and was observed limping for a short while before he recovered to play the entire ninety minutes against Oxford United.

Goalscorer Isidor’s dismissal in the waning minutes of the game further alarmed Sunderland supporters. Le Bris, nevertheless, stated during the match that he believes the striker has escaped a major injury. It couldn’t have been too serious because the Zenit loanee was also spotted dancing in front of the Roker End following the competition!

Fans are disappointed by Le Bris.

Sunderland supporters in the Roker End were somewhat let down by head coach Le Bris once more.

At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland supporters requested that their head coach gesture at them as the Black Cats were comfortably leading Oxford United.
