Michael Smith aside – one Sheffield Wednesday man deserves an ocean of praise for Portsmouth comeback

On Friday night, Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a thrilling victory over Portsmouth thanks in large part to Dominic

Iorfa, who came off the bench.

In the first half of Sheffield Wednesday’s victory over Portsmouth, there were anxious times when you might have

questioned whether their defense was going to crumble. With that came a lot of hope in one of the most

Dominic Iorfa, who was on the bench for injured Akin Famewo at Fratton Park thirty minutes earlier, twisted

awkwardly and briefly lay on the ground in agony. He grimaced and gripped the top of his leg for a good two

minutes. And more than two thousand pairs of eyeballs rolled behind him in the far end. With the crunch of autumn

leaves, the customary Wednesday injury bevvy had arrived.

A stint out for Iorfa would be troublesome for their numbers at the back, given Michael Ihiekwe is expected to be out

for an indeterminate amount of time and Famewo’s injury appears to be an immediate problem. After the game,

Danny Röhl told reporters that he fears it may be a “big, big injury.”

It turned out that it was all a dream. In his first competitive appearance in more than an hour since beach vacations

in the UK, Iorfa recovered and then some, finishing the remainder of the game.

As Play Up Pompey evolved into Pump Up Pompey, Iorfa and Di’Shon Bernard were called upon to handle 19

defensive aerials between them. They won 17 of those battles between them. By now, the young defender Bernard has

adapted well to the season and is displaying what may be his best run of play while wearing Wednesday’s uniform. It

could be argued that Iorfa’s story was the true highlight of the evening, on a night when players like Josh Windass,

Yan Valery, Barry Bannan, and of course, redemptive match-winner Michael Smith received enormous praise.

Since Leeds United’s impressive performance at Hillsborough on August 23, he had not played in more than two

months. It’s quite a request for a football player who hasn’t played in 63 days to be thrust into the middle of a half-

hour old Championship match. He shook, as was to be expected, although there were a few shaky moments in

possession of the early doors.

Iorfa had to get over his own disappointment on matchday, according to a post-match interview with Owls manager

Danny Röhl. It had been suggested that he would line up on the right of the back three while Valery had a break

while he waited for his chance to return to the game. Liam Palmer was chosen as a result of a late shift in perspective.

When I informed him earlier in the day that he would not be playing, it was difficult for him, Röhl remarked. “I know

Dom requires rhythm, but I chatted with him and we had a somewhat different vision at the start of the week. He

handled it like a man, and today’s response was excellent; he performed admirably for the team. You witnessed his

quickness and strength with Dish, who is currently playing at his best and stepping up since the start of the season.

It’s amazing.

The returnee overcame disappointment by winning seven headers, making three interceptions, clearing three balls,

and completing 79% of his passes. He was enormous.

The Owls’ three-pronged backline does appear somewhat thin going into the upcoming international break, and they

lack a naturally left-footed center-half, though Max Lowe has filled in there at other teams. Famewo is expected to

miss some time. Iorfa’s Pompey performance gives them hope that they can win because Valery and Palmer can fill

in and Bernard’s form is in good shape. I hope Wednesdayite’s injury scare from the first half doesn’t turn out to be

true.
