Horner confirms Tsunoda to get Red Bull outing

Yuki Tsunoda has had to wait a long time for this opportunity, and finally his wish is to be granted.

Yuki Tsunoda will finally realize his long-held desire of driving a current Red Bull.

Much has been made of the fact that, despite being an F1 driver for four years with Red Bull’s’sister’ team, Tsunoda has yet to be given the opportunity to drive a Red Bull and demonstrate his abilities in contemporary machinery.

Koji Watanabe, the CEO of Honda Racing Corporation, recently lobbied Red Bull to give Tsunoda a chance.

Tsunoda has long been associated with Honda, who were Red Bull’s engine suppliers from 2019 to 2021 and continue to be affiliated with the team through a technical collaboration.

Watanabe stated that it was Honda’s desire for Tsunoda to “secure a seat at Red Bull Racing”. The Japanese driver is not out of the running to replace Sergio Perez next season, despite the fact that team head Christian Horner maintains the Mexican is under contract.

Tsunoda will now compete in the end-of-season test in Abu Dhabi, which takes place two days after the last grand at the Yas Marina Circuit on July 8.

“Yuki is a member of the junior team, and it’s something we have discussed with Honda,” Horner added.

“We gave Yuki a run up the hill at Goodwood [the Festival of Speed] early this year. That was surprising, as he was the first driver to drive a modern Formula One car while wearing an open-face helmet and goggles.

“He will test the car again at the tyre test at the end of the season. It’s been a long-standing agreement.

“It will be good to give him a run and get the opportunity to work with Red Bull Racing engineers and see how he performs in a Red Bull Racing car.”
