BBC pundit blasts ‘clueless’ Leeds United player for performance in 0-0 draw at Bristol City

BBC pundit blasts ‘clueless’ Leeds United player for performance in 0-0 draw at Bristol City

Jon Newsome, a BBC pundit, offered his thoughts on Leeds United’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City.

After the international break, Leeds wanted to win three straight games at Ashton Gate, but they had a terrible time getting any kind of momentum.

Although Daniel Farke’s team had most of the possession, there weren’t many clear-cut opportunities. Leeds were incredibly wasteful when they did show up.

Leeds lost both Largie Ramazani and Junior Firpo badly down that left-hand side, and Sam Byram’s incessant propensity to cut in on his right foot was a major problem for the Whites.

Nevertheless, Leeds is the team that will have felt they should have won all three points after that game.

Jon Newsome blasts ‘clueless’ Manor Solomon for Leeds

Dan James was selected to take Ramazani’s spot in Leeds’ attack, but it is evident that he is still not fully recovered, which makes sense given that he has missed six games.

James had a fantastic chance to run the entire length of the pitch from Leeds’ defensive corner, but the opportunity was wasted due to a mix of poor control and exhaustion.

With only around 20 minutes remaining, Manor Solomon was called on to replace him, but he, like Tuesday night, was unable to get anything going.

It was quite painful to watch him attempt to connect up down that left-hand side after his initial engagement was letting a straightforward pass slip under his foot and out of play.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds post-match, Newsome believes Solomon looked completely ‘clueless’ when he came onto the field.

He said: “I think you would have taken that [seven points]. Obviously you would have liked nine but I think you would have taken that, most definitely. But what I was a little bit disappointed about today was when he put the subs on.

“They didn’t have a positive effect. Solomon down this left-hand-side, he looked a little bit clueless and couldn’t get into the game. Mateo Joseph’s header, he should have done better. A lot of the time Daniel Farke puts a substitution on they have a real positive effect, but I don’t think that happened today.”

Solomon not living up to expectations

Though it is still early days and he quite clearly needs time after all his injuries, it wouldn’t be unfair to say Solomon isn’t living up to the hype right now.

Leeds usually appear much more threatening when Ramazani and Wilfried Gnonto are on the left side because they can drift inside and create space for the full-back.

On the other hand, Solomon seems to be the kind of winger who enjoys hugging the touchline, which has made Leeds’ attack feel a little haphazard over the past two games.

Solomon must make significant progress between now and January; if not, it could be worthwhile to consider sending him back early in preference of hiring someone else.
