HOUSTON, October 25 — According to the German news agency dpa, Lionel Messi, the world champion and football celebrity, makes more money at his Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami than all of the football professionals at 22 of the other 28 MLS teams. As the victor of this year’s MLS regular season, Messi, 37, would receive a guaranteed salary of US$20,446,667, according to data from an overview released by the players’ union. Sponsor payments are not included in the union calculations. Miami’s squad maintenance costs US$41.7 million, which is a lot more than any other team in the league. The two Los Angeles teams and Toronto, with US$31.8 million, come next. While LAFC spends US$22 million in salary, the LA Galaxy team costs US$22.1 million.

The only teams that make more money overall than Messi’s Miami contract are Nashville (US$21.9 million), Cincinnati (US$21 million), and Houston (US$20.5 million). — Bernama-dpa
