Leeds United must avoid Patrick Bamford mistake amid Southampton transfer talk

Leeds United may want to reassess attacker Patrick Bamford’s future, as Southampton appear to be genuine contenders for a January transfer.

The 31-year-old has dropped down the pecking order behind Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe, with the forward allegedly willing to quit Elland Road [Carlton Palmer].

Daniel Farke’s team has scored a lot of goals this season, and they’ve lately climbed the Championship table to third place, three points behind league leaders Sunderland.

Despite Bamford’s limited playing time, Saints Marching stated, as relayed by Caught Offside [24 October], that Premier League strugglers Southampton are interested in a six-month loan deal, signalling a potentially major decision for the club.

Leeds United should re-consider Patrick Bamford stance

While Joseph and Piroe have emerged as the Whites’ preferred options this season, their goal-scoring abilities have not been particularly outstanding.

Joseph has only scored twice in 11 league games, while Piroe has four goals in the same number of games

The Spaniard has received some criticism for his efforts at Elland Road as the pair compete for a starting berth under Farke, but overlooking Bamford might be the team’s downfall.

Bamford proved he is still a viable option as he reaches the final years of his career, scoring eight league goals last season. However, if Southampton, which has yet to win a Premier League game this season, believes the forward can supply the goals needed to secure their top-flight status, why is the sentiment different at Leeds?

Farke has already learnt the hard way this season how rapidly injuries can accumulate in the Championship, and with so much football still to play, the German cannot afford to lose a viable offensive option.

However, Bamford appears to be determined on leaving Elland Road, and the decision may be beyond the club’s control.

Regardless of how the scenario unfolds, Farke has chosen to prioritise promise above experience for Leeds, and fans will hope that this choice does not jeopardise the club’s pursuit for automatic promotion.
