Ex-Premier League player sacked by League Two club Swindon after just five months in charge

Swindon have sacked manager Mark Kennedy after just five months in charge.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool winger has been at the club since May.
However, with the Robins in the relegation zone in League Two, he has been terminated.

Swindon lost 2-1 to Salford City on Tuesday, dropping to third from bottom in the fourth division with only two league wins in 13 games.

The decision to dismiss ex-Ireland international Kennedy came only one day before the League Two match against Gillingham.
On Friday, the club issued a statement saying, “Swindon Town Football Club has parted ways with head coach Mark Kennedy.”

“Marcus Bignot, Steve Mildenhall, and Gavin Gunning will remain in their current positions, with all three first-team coaches present to monitor this weekend’s game against Gillingham.

“Everyone at Swindon Town Football Club would like to thank Mark for his dedication and hard work during his tenure with the club, and we wish him the best in the future.

“A further update on the club’s new head coach will be provided at the earliest opportunity.”

Following his retirement from football, Kennedy began coaching at Ipswich Town in 2012.

In 2016, he departed his former club Manchester City and spent time in Wolves’ academy.

His first managerial post in men’s football was at Macclesfield, when he took over in January 2020.
However, he left the club in August after declining a new contract following the club’s relegation to the National League due to a points deduction for financial reasons.

He worked as Lee Bowyer’s deputy at Birmingham City before leaving to become Lincoln City manager in 2022.

Kennedy oversaw an 11th-place finish that season but was fired the following October.

He joined Swindon on a two-year contract as a permanent replacement for previous Robins manager Michael Flynn.

The English Football League club will now hunt for their fourth permanent manager since Scott Lindsey left in January 2023.

Swindon last played in League One in 2021, when they were relegated second from bottom.

The Robins have taken action to prevent them from sliding out of the Football League.

Speaking after his farewell game in charge of Salford, the 48-year-old Kennedy said: “We had good moments in the game, but unfortunately we found a way to lose the game, and the decision-making just leaves me scratching my head a little.”

“With the exception of Walsall, I don’t believe anyone has come close to beating us this season.

“In the games we’ve lost, I think Darren [Moore] from Port Vale, Grant [McCann] from Doncaster, and Karl Robinson tonight, when I think about what they’ll think, I keep coming up with the same answer: ‘they were lucky to beat us, they didn’t half help us.'”

“That is something we must alter soon. I am quite proud to work for the club; whether I am here tomorrow or for ten years, it is an excellent organization.

“My talks with someone who is really enthusiastic about his team have been nothing but positive.

“Worrying about tomorrow ruins today and I can only control the controllables, so most of this is a completely hypothetical question.”
