Consecutive Sheffield United defeats highlight work to be done as Chris Wilder makes honest admission

Work to be done for Sheffield United to resurrect promotion push after successive blows at Leeds United and Middlesbrough

Chris Wilder has confessed that Sheffield United still have “a lot of work” to do this season after being dragged down by a series of league defeats. The Blades had a fantastic start to the season before last Friday’s first defeat at Leeds, which was followed by a 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough last night.
That two-game stretch had been highlighted on the calendars of United’s coaching staff as a difficult one to navigate, and Wilder’s side will be eager to get back on track as soon as possible, ideally beginning with this weekend’s trip to Bramall Lane to face Stoke City. Their unbeaten start garnered them plaudits and Wilder a manager of the month award, but this will be a true test of character as they look to establish that the mini-blip is just that, rather than a more definitive sign of how their promotion quest will go.

“We’ ve come to two of the toughest places to get a result, back to back, and we’ve not got what we wanted from them,” Wilder told me. “I have to clarify, however, that when people are handing out monthly awards and conducting interviews, we are not talking about being the greatest squad in the division. Because, as I mentioned earlier, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“I am not being negative because I have a lot of respect for this club and Michael [Carrick, Boro manager]. However, Boro has been working on it for a long time to bring it to this point. There has been a lot of hard effort put into it, and it must also go into us. Has it reached the desired destination, Leeds? No. We got it. So we will keep working on it.”
