Auston Trusty Explains How Aberdeen Draw Gave Celtic a “Wake-up Call” Before Atalanta Clash

Celtic centre-back Auston Trusty has explained how Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Aberdeen gave him and his teammates a wake-up call before last night’s hotly anticipated Champions League clash with Atalanta.

The Hoops showed elite defensive capabilities in the 0-0 stalemate, putting in a stout display that was worthy of a useful point.

Auston Trusty stood out as centre-back, and Kasper Schmeichel was always there between the sticks.

The American used a well-founded defence performance to quell a number of his perhaps harsh detractors.

After yesterday night’s game, Trusty thanked the travelling supporters on Instagram for their ongoing support.

He then spoke to the media, describing how the draw with the Dons over the weekend was actually a boon for yesterday night’s game: “We should have won that game very easily, but we took the foot off the gas,” Trusty said (The Celtic Way).

With a 2-0 lead in the first half, it was a simple game, but they eventually rallied. Since they woke us up, it’s almost a godsend that the game took place.

“In order to be ready for these Champions League matches, we must always push ourselves, regardless of the game we’re playing. It’s just the attitude.

“It was kind of a wake-up call for us this weekend. We can’t take it easy because our mindset is for the Champions League games and we need to perform at this level.”

Trusty might feel unfairly treated because he was not named UEFA’s Champions League Player of the Match in Bergamo last night.

The green-and-white-clad 26-year-old appeared to have been made last night.

He and his teammates will be excited to earn a point away from the Europa League winners from the previous campaign, but they must return their focus to the home field because they have back-to-back league games against Motherwell and Dundee coming up.

Aberdeen will be waiting for the Bhoys in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals the following weekend before they can even think about Europe again.
