Following an acceleration of negotiations with the English Football Association on Tuesday, Thomas Tuchel has agreed to take over as manager of England. The 51-year-old is set to become the men’s team’s third foreign manager, and its first German boss.

Since the start of the search for Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor, the FA has had Tuchel on their shortlist, which also includes Lee Carsley, the interim manager, and Pep Guardiola of Manchester City.

It focused on Tuchel, the standout player on an exceptional resume who guided Chelsea to Champions League success in 2021. Since leaving Bayern Munich in May, he has remained unemployed.

Following Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, Tuchel accepted the position of head coach abroad. Nationality shouldn’t be a barrier to the position, according to Mark Bullingham, the FA’s chief executive, who oversaw the hiring process with technical director John McDermott.

Bullingham brought up the fact that Sarina Wiegman, the head coach of the England women’s team, is Dutch at the June European Championship. To put it another way, the FA was and is pleased to have trusted someone from outside of England.

Tuchel is unquestionably an Anglophile. He is fluent in English, which the FA requires of foreign applicants. He loved his 18 months at Chelsea and became a cult hero to its supporters.

Even though Chelsea was then owned by a Russian, Roman Abramovich, Tuchel’s leadership and oratory abilities were highlighted when he opposed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Tuchel discovered that he enjoyed the British media’s emphasis on personality.

Tuchel is adamant and left his four prior positions in a somewhat shady light due to rumors of falling out with players and directors after leaving Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern, in that order.

However, when Tuchel finds his rhythm, he can motivate and inspire others, creating momentum. He is incredibly charming and has a track record of success at the top level. He won everything at PSG at home before nearly missing out on lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time when they lost to Bayern in the 2020 final. At Chelsea, he would personally make up for that. He had won the DFB-Pokal at Dortmund. He would win the Bundesliga at Bayern.

Given that they collaborated at Chelsea and Bayern, Tuchel would be likely to bring along English coach Anthony Barry. In his early career, Barry served under Stephen Kenny with the Republic of Ireland and is currently Roberto Martinez’s assistant with Portugal.

Carsley, a former Ireland international midfielder, was considered by the FA to be promoted permanently from his position as coach of the England Under-21s, but questions were raised regarding his suitability and if he truly desired the position. Carsley has occasionally found it difficult to speak clearly in press conferences and has received harsh criticism for his team’s performance in last Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley.

Guardiola was approached by the FA at the start of the process, but it was always thought unlikely that he would leave City. The front-runners from England have been Eddie Howe and Graham Potter. Howe is concentrating on his job at Newcastle, where he has a £5 million release clause in his contract. Potter, who left Chelsea in April 2023 and is currently in between employment, is more inclined to go back to club management.

Harry Kane, the captain of England, who joined Tuchel’s Bayern Munich in 2023, stated: “Obviously, I can’t really comment until it’s announced, but we have to wait and see.” I know Thomas from last year, of course. When the FA men learn more, I’m sure they’ll get in touch with me because I’m a terrific coach and person. The Guardian
