Morecambe Grind Out Big Away Victory But Problems Remain For Derek Adams

Morecambe Grind Out Big Away Victory But Problems Remain For Derek Adams.

Although Morecambe’s season has been lacklustre thus far, they managed to break their winless streak at the beginning of Derek Adam’s third tenure as manager with a commanding victory at Barrow, and for that effort, they were named The Deck’s League Two Team of the Week.

They supplant Crew Alexandra, who defeated Gillingham, a team vying for promotion, to win the title with their 1-0 victory over Barrow.

One Defeat in Six but Morecambe Need More Victories

After winning at Barrow and drawing four of the previous five games, Morecambe has become one of the hardest clubs to defeat on recent matchdays. They have been able to contain Fleetwood Town and the wildly successful Notts County, but going into this round of games, they were the only team in League Two without a victory.

Having taken the helm this summer, Derek Adams is currently serving his third stint as manager. By the conclusion of 2023–24, the squad had lost five straight games, bringing their league winless streak to 15 games when they travelled to Barrow. The 49-year-old Scottish manager has found it difficult to stop the team’s downward spiral.

Goalkeeper Stuart Moore was in fine form, making some excellent saves to keep the home team at bay. Barrow had won four and drawn one of their five matches on home soil so the result is all the more impressive considering that statistic.

Although they don’t have much firepower up front, Morecambe has several strong players in defence, such as Rhys Williams, a player on loan from Liverpool. As far as total shoots, on-target percentage, dribbles, and crucial passes per game go, they are in the bottom four. Their first win of the season is mostly due to their defence, which included Adam Lewis, Jamie Stott, and David Tutonda. All three players did a fantastic job of holding Barrow at bay.

If they are to pick up more wins to have any chance of survival, it will come down to the efforts of their players in defensive areas. Callum Jones, in midfield, is also key with his work-rate to help out his back-line and it does appear as if the goalscoring burden may be on new arrival Ben Tollitt.

The versatile winger has now scored three goals from an expected goal tally of just 1.25  but the 29-year-old has built a career for himself in non-league and may not be a reliable source as the season progresses. The manager will need his other attackers to step up if they are to build on their recent run.

Upcoming Fixtures and Future Prospects

Morecambe have proven themselves to be capable against any side in League Two and that will be put to the test as they host Milton Keynes Dons this weekend. Their win over MK Dons in January ended a run of five straight defeats in the head-to-head and Morecambe scored just once in those losses.

MK Dons have had their troubles this campaign but are still a very dangerous side, as are Morecambe’s next opponents on the road, AFC Wimbledon. Johnnie Jackson’s side have conceded just five goals in their eight matches and sit in tenth place with a couple of games in hand on the teams above them.

It would be fantastic if Morecambe could win both of these games and take up three points. Even though they play competitively, Morecambe appears weak in every game and may have a difficult season ahead of them. Michael Mellon, a former loanee who scored 13 goals in 22 League Two games during the first half of the previous season, is not there to replace him.

Despite focussing on non-league acquisitions during the summer, Morecambe has not yet replaced the Scottish under-21 international. They attempted a risky tactic to avoid being dropped, but they were unable to counteract the club’s registration restrictions. There seems to be early evidence of a relegation struggle.
