Reading FC’s manager was ‘disappointed’ with the EFL Trophy decision.
Reading manager Ruben Selles confessed he was ‘disappointed’ when last Tuesday’s EFL Trophy match against Cheltenham Town was postponed.
Supporters and staff alike had began their trek to Gloucestershire, braving several downpours in a week of bad weather, when the referee decided to call off the game an hour and a half before it was scheduled to start.
In the second game of the Royals’ EFL Trophy campaign, West Ham United were defeated 3-1 last month.
Despite Reading’s 10-day international break, Selles was hoping to see young players break through with great experiences in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
In an interview with BBC Radio Berkshire, Selles expressed a desire for the match to proceed in order to provide more opportunities for young players.
“We were ready,” he told Ady Williams during an event hosted by the Former Players’ Association. “We completely revamped the lineup and have some younger players growing with us, and those games provide a platform for them to do so, like Andre Garcia did and will do with some others. For guys like Harlee Dean, it’s critical to play those 90 minutes, so I’m a little unhappy they didn’t get the game, but perhaps they will in the future.
