In order to threaten Greg Taylor’s grasp on the position, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expanded his left-back pool in the summer by signing Alex Valle on loan from Barcelona.

There is still no clarity regarding Taylor’s Celtic contract status as time passes. If nothing happens between now and the end of the holiday season, the Scotland international might be prepared to talk about a pre-contract in January.

With 183 appearances under his belt and eight goals and 28 assists in his career, the 26-year-old is getting close to making 200 appearances for the Bhoys. He is now acknowledged as a member of the seasoned core that has delivered a multitude of domestic championships to Celtic Park.

As he told the media last month, Rodgers wants Taylor to sign a Celtics contract extension because “he’s a fantastic player for us.” He’s excellent at making that role function and look the way we want it to. He is aware of our deep desire for him.

In his competition for a place, Valle joined the Bhoys for a £1.3 million loan fee from Barcelona, but despite enjoying a bright start to life at the club, his agreement does not include an option to buy.

While the main focus for now will be establishing himself in Glasgow, he also added a year to his terms at his parent side before making the journey to Celtic.

Truthfully, it remains to be seen whether a permanent deal could be viable for Valle. It would likely be dependent on a willingness from all parties, though there is no guarantee that happens.

Celtic’s internal left-back pool could also hold value

Considering the left-back alternatives available to the Bhoys, Matthew Anderson of Celtic is now on loan at Admira Wacker for the second time. He and colleague Ben Summers scored in a 2-0 victory against SV Stripfing earlier this month.

It will be his 21st birthday next summer. Even though he has shown encouraging signs at the Hoops’ partner club, he has yet to make his competitive first-team debut. At this time, it seems doubtful that he will be taken seriously, but stranger things have happened.On the other hand, after holding his own in the Champions League, Mitchell Frame earned his senior Celtic debut against Feyenoord last year, and buzz about the 18-year-old’s potential spread.

He hasn’t been spotted in the senior side since, though.Frame, who has 13 appearances for Celtic B this season, is under contract in Glasgow until 2026.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Taylor and Valle’s fates, is it possible that one of them will succeed next summer if neither project sees success? Time will tell.
