Norwich City: Errol Mundle-Smith tipped to follow Jon Rowe’s footsteps

Lately, Norwich City has seen a fair share of talent come through the ranks at Carrow Road, with some players establishing themselves on the banks of the River Wensum.

Football club players who showed promise as young players have left the nest, including Jon Rowe and Abu Kamara. Other players who were on the books at an early age include Alex Matos and Bali Mumba.

Errol Mundle-Smith is one player who has many people talking at such a young age for the East Anglian team, so there are always lots of eyes on the next big thing coming around the conveyor belt.

We took the chance to talk to Football League World’s Canaries fan pundit Zeke Downes about the teenage star, who he thinks is destined to be one of the next stars to break through for the Norfolk side.

Errol Mundle-Smith impresses in Norwich City youth setup

Mundle-Smith, like Kamara and Rowe before him, has established a solid reputation at Norwich’s youth, as seen by his goal-scoring instincts over the last two seasons.

The 18-year-old scored three goals in seven games for the Canaries’ young team in Premier League 2 last season, giving him a total of 12 goals across the under-18 and under-21 age categories. He has also scored five goals in six games this season.

Those keeping an eye on things within the City youth structure will have taken notice of his brace against a youthful Southampton team, and another goal against Manchester United’s academy will only have enhanced his already growing reputation.

While there may be a number of stars ready to make the step-up to the big time in the years to come, Downes highlighted the young striker as the next big talent waiting in the wings at Carrow Road, having signed his first professional deal with the club earlier this year.

When asked about the situation, Downes said: “I think the next youngster to break through at the club will probably be Errol Mundle-Smith.

“I think it is often easier for attacking players to break through, because I think it is easier to look good if you are scoring lots of goals.

“He is doing well, he has not been around for very long, but he is scoring a lot of goals, and our youth team right now looks pretty strong. So he is doing well to stand out in there.”

Norwich City must learn from Abu Kamara, Alex Matos situations with Errol Mundle-Smith

The best young players at Norwich City have frequently moved farther afield in recent seasons as a result of the Canaries’ inability to play first team football.

In recent seasons, Matos has firsthand experience with that as the midfielder was unable to play for the squad before relocating to Chelsea, where he has played for the main team and enjoyed a loan stint at Huddersfield Town.

Abu Kamara Hull City

The circumstances surrounding Kamara [shown], a gifted attacker who shone while on loan for Portsmouth last season before submitting a transfer request this summer, will also continue to haunt many in Norfolk.

After that, the young player moved to Hull City, a Championship foe, albeit he has only made one start for the Tigers since leaving Carrow Road in August.

The Carrow Road supporters will be filled with optimism that past mistakes have been learnt from, that academy talents are given every chance to succeed, and that their long-term future is guaranteed, especially with Mundle-Smith emerging as the next big thing.
