Football Insider reported earlier this month that Sunderland are working on a deal to bring Henderson back to the Stadium of Light. It is now understood that Henderson would be receptive to the idea of coming back to his old club, as he reaches the final stages of his career. It remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck between the Championship side and Ajax, with the January transfer window being the next opportunity to discuss a possible deal.

Henderson has made 14 appearances in the Eredivisie, only 11 of which were starts (all data from Fbref).

Sunderland are allegedly looking for a short-term deal with the option to extend until summer 2026.

Henderson left English football in the summer of 2023 following his departure from Liverpool, but he might now return to aid his former club compete for promotion back to the Premier League.

Sunderland’s promotion ambition

Sunderland are currently leading the Championship table and seek to maintain their position in the top two or top six at the end of the season.

Régis Le Bris has received a lot of appreciation for the work he’s done since taking over the first-team squad in the summer.

The Frenchman has supervised six victories, one tie, and two losses in their first nine league games, putting them level with second-place Sheffield United.

Sunderland’s next game is away to Hull City on October 20.

Henderson deal would be very exciting for Sunderland

Sunderland could benefit from a short-term deal to bring back Henderson, a highly experienced midfielder who has captained Liverpool and played 81 times for England. However, the Wearside club may be concerned about Henderson’s wages, as they do not want to disrupt their current structure for six to 18 months.
