Carlton Palmer has cautioned Norwich City to look into extending Angus Gunn’s contract with the club, citing his previous ties to Rangers.

The goalkeeper is one of the Canaries’ players whose contract is scheduled to expire in the summer, having joined from Southampton in 2021.

Since joining the club three years ago, the Scotland international has been a frequent starter with 88 league appearances (all data from Fbref).

He has started all nine Championship games this season, under new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup.

However, it remains to be seen if he can reach an agreement with the Norfolk club on a new contract, or if he will leave Carrow Road in 2025.

Palmer suggests that Norwich should consider signing Gunn to a new deal as soon as possible to minimize disruption to Thorup’s team.

Rangers may sign a pre-contract agreement with him in January if a new deal is not finalized, as previously reported by Football Insider.

“It is a concern, and it is a disruption for the manager when important players are coming to the end of their contract,” said Palmer to Football League World.

Angus Gunn’s contract with Norwich ends in the summer.

“He is now attracting a lot of attention, mainly from Glasgow Rangers, and they can sign him to a pre-contract in January.

“He’s been in all of the Championship games thus far, has been between the sticks, and has 40 clean sheets in 144 games.

“The new manager is hopeful that the director of football, Ben Knapper, is allegedly not just considering Angus Gunn’s contract, but also a few other players who are out of contract.

“It is a distraction for the manager because, although the players claim to be focused on the game, which they are, they will also be thinking about the fact that they will be out of contract at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has been a regular starter for Norwich City for two seasons and has made 100 appearances, including 31 Premier League games.

“He has a regular spot under new manager Thorup, which is a concern for Norwich because if they don’t agree personal terms and don’t tie him down, he could sign a pre-contract with Rangers in January.”

“But, considering that if he does not sign a new deal or they cannot agree on terms, I believe he will be sold during the January transfer window.

“But, with Norwich just outside the play-offs right now, their performances and results have improved in recent weeks; it’s critical that you have some consistency, and that Angus Gunn is signed to a new deal.

“It’s imperative.”

Norwich City’s promotion ambitions

Norwich remain in contention for a play-off spot in the early stages of the new season, sitting seventh in the league and one point behind sixth-place Watford.

Gunn might be critical to their prospects of finishing in the top six again this year, but he is now injured after withdrawing from international action with Scotland.

The goalkeeper is one of 11 Norwich players whose contracts expire in 2025, among Ashley Barnes, Emiliano Marcondes, and Onel Hernandez.

The Canaries will meet Stoke City on October 19.

Ashley Barnes

A new deal for Gunn is required at Norwich.

During his time at Norfolk, Gunn has established himself as a skilled and reliable first-choice goalkeeper.

It might be tough to feel secure in this job because so much emphasis is placed on mistakes.

However, Gunn has been very reliable for Norwich and is someone the club should aim to keep around for the long run.

It would be a setback to the first-team squad if he left in 2025, whether in the summer or during the January transfer window.
