Scotland media react to what John Souttar did away from Rangers on Saturday.

Rangers star John Souttar pleased the Scottish media with his “sure-footed” performance against Croatia on Saturday (12 October).

The Scotsman rated Souttar 7/10 after Scotland’s 2-1 loss in Zagreb, calling his performance “a fine effort” with excellent distribution.

The Edinburgh Evening News likewise gave Souttar a 7/10 rating, citing his “crucial intervention” to keep Scotland in the game at 2-1 in an overall “comfortable” performance.

The Herald gave Souttar a 6/10 rating but applauded his play, stating that he “threw his body on the line” and nearly rescued the day before the winning goal.

Rangers’ John Souttar mounts a permanent Scotland claim.

Souttar’s capacity to be a regular starter for both club and nation is undeniable, as he has started and played in all 13 of the Gers’ matches this season in all competitions.

Only Jack Butland is in the similar boat for Philippe Clement’s side, and Souttar’s ability to translate his excellent club form to the international stage would be beneficial to fans at both Ibrox and Hampden Park.

Scotland may be without Scott McKenna, Jack Hendry, and Liam Cooper right now, but none of those three are playing as frequently or as well for one of the world’s greatest domestic clubs.

Souttar’s performance against Croatia was not flawless, as he missed a close-range header that could have tied the game for Scotland. However, he proved to be a useful addition for Steve Clarke’s team.

If Souttar maintains his spot in Scotland’s XI for the upcoming match against Portugal on October 15, he has the potential to further enhance his reputation by limiting Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates.
