SAD NEWS: The frustrating wait for Celtic’s Auston Trusty continues, with no Mauricio Pochettino breakthrough.

Celtic defender Auston Trusty is still waiting for a huge opportunity to impress with the United States national team following Mauricio Pochettino’s first match in command. Trusty was nominated to the USA squad for two games this week, hoping for an opportunity to start a new era for his country.

The Bhoys summer signing has two caps but has not played since coming on as a substitute in a Nations League final victory against Canada in June 2023. Pochettino was chosen as USA manager last month and given the opportunity to experiment in a friendly against Panama on Saturday night.

Celtic defender Auston Trusty unused in USA win

Despite the absence of Crystal Palace’s Chris Richards and Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers due to injuries, he did not use Trusty in Austin, Texas. The Argentine selected a versatile back three of veteran Tim Ream, Toulouse prodigy Mark McKenzie, and youngster Joseph Scally, with Fulham’s left-sided sensation Antonee Robinson playing wing-back. Few complaints will be made from the United States’ position. The Americans won 2-0, with goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi.

Trusty can still make a positive impression on Pochettino

With training continuing until a mid-week friendly encounter away to Mexico on Wednesday night, Trusty still has time to attract Pochettino’s attention and may even be featured in that game if the new USA manager is eager to see what all of his new charges can achieve.

Carter-Vickers, a former Sheffield United defender, is returning to training ahead of Aberdeen’s showdown at Celtic Park. Brendan Rodgers has still to decide whether to play Trusty or the in-form Liam Scales in the left-sided centre-back position alongside Carter-Vickers. With Trusty’s travel schedule this weekend, the smart money is on Scales to continue for the time being.
