It’s derby day: Newcastle United take on Sunderland in the Barclays Women’s Championship

If you’re bored of the international break then fear not, Becky Langley’s lasses are in action today at the Stadium of Light facing Sunderland in a 2pm kick-off.

Newcastle United Women are now in the Barclays Women’s Championship after back-to-back promotions and the lasses are eyeing a third successive promotion into the Women’s Super League.

The lasses have got off to a decent start in the Championship racking up seven points from four games, which is three more than today’s opponents, Sunderland.

It’s the first derby of the season, and by all accounts Newcastle fans are expected to be the majority in the Stadium of Light this afternoon – must be double time at Nissan.

Newcastle face Sunderland at the Stadium of light live on YouTube

If you haven’t managed to get yourself a ticket to the match the whole game is being streamed live on YouTube, it’s bound to be more exciting than England’s Nations League games at least.

New signing, England international Demi Stokes has shared her excitement at playing in the derby as a former Sunderland player with Newcastle’s official site.

“It’s been 15 years since I was at Sunderland which does show my age a little bit.

“I’ve only got good memories from my time there. I remember we beat Chelsea at the Stadium of Light when nobody expected us to.

“Obviously I’m now on the other side so it’s all about us winning and picking up the three points.

“Everyone loves the derby and it’s all you know growing up as a kid in the North East.

“I used to love going to the games as a kid, so as a fan, I know everyone will be buzzing going into the match on Sunday. We can’t lose sight of what is important, which is winning the game.”

Demi Stokes isn’t the only former Sunderland player facing her old club

Newcastle has another former Black Cat on the books after bringing in goalkeeper Claudia Moan this summer.

There promises to be a fair bit of extra spice added to the game thanks to the former players taking to the pitch, not that a derby needs any spicing up.

Tune in to the YouTube link above for a 2pm kick-off and hopefully watch our lasses show that just because they’re the Championship newbies, they’re not here to make up the numbers.
