Bednarek believes Southampton are heading in ‘right direction’

Defendant Saints need to practise “two things,” according to Jan Bednarek, but they are moving in the right direction.

The Polish international emphasised that Southampton must “react” better when they do give up possession and cease losing the ball in risky situations.

After seven games this season, Russell Martin’s team is without a win; their lone point came from a 1-1 tie with Ipswich Town, a team that was also promoted.

Bednarek, who just inked a multi-year contract extension with St. Mary’s, is still confident that the Saints can turn things around.

After the 3-1 loss against Arsenal, he claimed in an interview with ViaPlay Poland: “They will take advantage of it when you lose the ball in the middle of the pitch once. Though we still need to evaluate this game, I believe we are headed in the right direction.

Jan Bednarek of Southampton plays Manchester UnitedThe response in the second half was better following the events in Bournemouth during the first half.

“The match against Arsenal was, in my opinion, hopeful, but right now, we need the points more than anything else.

“Up until we gave up the equaliser, which Kai Havertz scored, we were in a strong position at that time. It was just an error, and that’s the ball.

“Things will happen, but I felt that the response following the defeat was inadequate. We would have put a halt to it and taken action to correct that error.

“I think that we definitely have to work on that, that the style in which we play and the way we play cause these losses to be at such a level when the organisation in the opponent’s pressing is at such a high level.

“I think that what we have to practice are two things. Either don’t lose those balls or simply react very well to those losses.

“We’re showing that even at Arsenal we can play good football, we can play well, but in the end, the most important thing is the results and that’s what we need at the moment.”

Jan Bednarek signed a new three-year deal last monthLast month, Jan Bednarek inked a new three-year contract.Bednarek responded, “Simply win the match,” when asked how the Saints can turn around their dismal season opening performance.

That, in my opinion, is the most difficult, straightforward, and lovely aspect of everything. It goes without saying that this is a challenging journey.

“It’s stressful and I have a little headache. There is a certain, one could say, anxiety about what lies ahead, but it’s an amazing thing.

“To experience it, to go through it, to play in the world’s top league. We need to gain a great deal of experience from it despite how difficult it is.

“We have a young team, so I think that step by step we are going in the right direction and with such a good coach, such a good staff, we know that with hard work we can achieve it and even this season we can be calm inside.”

Bednarek drew praise for his performance against Arsenal, which saw him make a number of blocks and key defensive interventions.

Jan Bednarek against ArsenalManager Martin believed that Jan Bednarek’s performance against Arsenal was not deserved of a 3-1 loss, but he also acknowledged that we are beginning to see the best side of the defender.

Although Bednarek was happy with his own performance, he maintained that the outcome was far more significant.

He said, “You want to give it your all for the team on an individual basis because that’s why we train to compete in these kinds of games.”

However, we ultimately lose the game, and we must undoubtedly make a number of deductions. Naturally, I make every effort to support the squad on the pitch.

Blocking these shots, clearing crosses, and playing the ball are my tasks. On the pitch, I try my hardest to complete the many tasks assigned to me.

“The next move, the next ball, and doing what I can do best are what matter most to me; sometimes it will be better, and other times it will be worse.

At times, I simply don’t know if it’s a lack of knowledge or experience. I may be missing a few things, but I always want the team to succeed.

“I always want to play the best I can and I think that of course there were a few important blocks in this match, but I think that is natural when playing against Arsenal.”
