Norwich City have had a good start to the 2024/25 Championship season, but they will need Carrow Road to be a genuine fortress as the season progresses.

The Canaries had difficulties in the summer when Gabriel Sara, Jon Rowe, and Abu Kamara all departed the club following last season’s defeat to Leeds United in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

They have, however, displayed good form recently under Johannes Hoff Thorup, who has won three of his previous four league games and drawn at home to Leeds on Wednesday evening.

EFL Championship standings, as of October 3
Position Team P GD Pts
6th Blackburn Rovers 8 +5 15
7th Middlesbrough 8 +4 14
8th Watford 8 -1 13
9th Hull City 8 +3 12
10th Norwich City 8 +2 12
11th Oxford United 8 +2 11

Norwich have yet to lose at home in the Championship, and the Canaries will need to keep making Carrow Road a difficult place to visit if they are to finish in or near the top six at the end of the season.

Football League World rated Norwich’s home attendances based on Transfermarkt numbers.

5 Norwich City vs Stevenage: 13,054.

During their EFL Cup first-round match against Stevenage in August, Norwich had their lowest home attendance this season.

According to Transfermarkt, 13,054 fans entered Carrow Road. Those who did show up were rewarded to a seven-goal spectacular, with Norwich winning 4-3 and securing a second-round fixture against Crystal Palace.

Nonetheless, attendance for the Stevenage game was not particularly low, given that many Championship teams have far lower attendance statistics for home domestic cup matches.

4Norwich City vs Leeds United: 26,261.

Outside Carrow Road

Norwich’s lowest home attendance was 26,261 for a recent 1-1 draw against Leeds at Carrow Road.

A chunk of those will have been Leeds fans, who sell out every home and away game. The fact that it was a televised midweek game will also have played a role.

However, Norwich continue to come close to selling out Carrow Road each home matchweek.

Norwich City acquired James Maddison for only £2.5 million, but they profited far more than that when he joined Leicester City in 2018.

Carrow Road has a maximum capacity of little more than 27,000, and Norwich’s average home attendance after four games is 26,368. If they maintain this level of attendance throughout the season, it will be greater than last year’s average of 24,290.

3Norwich City v Sheffield United: 26,373.

Outside Carrow Road

In their second home game of the season, Norwich City drew 1-1 with Sheffield United, with a slightly higher crowd of 26,373.

2Norwich City vs Blackburn Rovers: 26,400

Norwich City Carrow Road

The Carrow Road attendance has not varied much this season, with only 27 more fans apparently present when Blackburn Rovers visited.

It was Norwich’s first home game of the new season, and both teams scored goals, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

1. Norwich City vs. Watford: 26,438.

Once again, those who showed up were rewarded handsomely as Norwich scored their greatest win of the season, defeating Watford 4-1.

The match was more equal than the result suggests, but the Canaries were sharp when it counted most in front of their home fans, winning deservedly with goals from Callum Doyle, Borja Sainz, Marcelino Nunez, and Ben Chrisene.

Norwich has not had a larger home attendance than

n the one of 26,438 when they faced Watford on September 21.
