Norwich City: Christian Fassnacht interview on David Wagner

Though David Wagner brought Christian Fassnacht to Carrow Road, the former Norwich City head coach has kept him apart from his football.

Sixteen months after collaborating with him at the Swiss club, Wagner oversaw the acquisition of Fassnacht from Young Boys in the summer of 2023.

The 30-year-old was then fired at the end of the season by sporting director Ben Knapper, leaving him in the dark about the club’s future and earning the nickname “Wagner’s man.”

But he insists he didn’t relocate to Norfolk merely to catch up with his old employer and that his main goal now is to make an impact under the new Canaries manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.

“Of course I knew him from when I worked with him back in Switzerland,” Fassnacht remarked of Wagner to the Pink Un. But there are other reasons I came to Norwich besides him.

“It is regrettable that he had to leave. However, I’m content and still feel like a member of the group. I want to demonstrate that right away.”

Following a mediocre debut season in English football, the winger is aware that he can get better in green and yellow. However, he’s sure he can accomplish it and is eager to try.

“To be honest, it was an average season from my side,” he said. “I’m positive that I can perform 100% better. While it’s difficult to always provide my best effort, I’m making an effort to do better.

“I’ve had enough time to focus on the mental aspect of the game, so maybe I’ll feel incredibly secure and able to demonstrate my true abilities when I return to the pitch.

“I believe that during the previous season, I only had a handful of games when I felt like I performed to the best of my abilities. So maybe this season, I can perform better.”
