JUST IN: Former Premier League striker reveals wasted Celtics opportunity

Former Premier League striker Carlton Cole has revealed that he turned down the option to join Celtic in 2005. The West Ham legend would eventually sign for the Paradise club, but he stated that there was an opportunity when he was at the height of his abilities. Cole revealed on Frank McAvennie’s Let Me Be Frank podcast that he had the option to sign for the club under Gordon Strachan. “I was invited to go there before I moved to West Ham. I met with Bolton and Sam Allardyce before I left, I believe around 2005/2006. I did a medical with Spurs, but it did not go through, and Celtic were one of the other teams.

Ten years later, Cole would make the switch to Celtic, leaving many puzzled. The experienced attacker struggled with a calf issue and appeared rusty. The Englishman had only one goal and one contribution to show for his tenure at the club (the latter coming against Inverness). Cole has criticised Ronny Deila for his involvement in the club’s poor performances, but he has also expressed his joy in wearing the Hoops.
