Jesse Lingard has revealed his injury difficulties at Nottingham Forest, claiming that the club’s battle against PSR rules “may” have contributed to his absence from

some games.

The former Manchester United star has spoken out in a Times editorial, explaining how he ended up traveling to South Korea to join FC Seoul. Lingard is

rediscovering his form and scored in a K League match against Gwangju last week, putting them in title contention.

The former Manchester United and England great possesses undoubted talent, but it was not evident at the City Ground, where he made 20 appearances and scored

three goals in an unimpressive tenure after signing on a free transfer in 2022. However, Lingard has spoken out about his injury troubles at Forest, claiming that

even when he was fit, the club’s need to curtail spending led to him remaining on the sidelines.

“Let’s start with my last Premier League stint, with Nottingham Forest,” he told the Times. “I adored the team and its supporters, but when I joined upon their

promotion in 2022, it was on a one-year contract with significant appearance incentives.

“Forest became concerned about the league’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), and as the season progressed, there was a need to cut expenditure, and

those bonuses may have contributed to my absence from certain games.

“But I had a hard time physically. Throughout the season, I had significant tendonitis in my knees and Achilles tendon. Sometimes I played in pain, and other times

I was simply too sore to play at all. The problems hampered my decelerations – when you race past an opponent or into space, then stop and turn, which is an

important element of my game.”

Lingard took time off after leaving Forest to care for his family, as his grandmother, Pamela, became ill and died in November. He stressed the importance of looking

after them and his grandfather, Ken. They both looked after him for a big portion of his childhood.

“She grew quite ill last summer. Despite working hard and missing being at a club, being out of contract felt like God’s plan for me to be at home with my family. So

that is what I did. I spent as much time with them as possible, and when Nan died in November, Grandad was devastated. He was sad and had dizzy episodes, so he

was hospitalized. He, too, required attention, and there was a funeral to plan as well as a speech to deliver. I think that everything happens for a reason, and that

while my family was suffering, it was just time for me to take a break from performing.”
