Celtic to land ‘£5m’ windfall after Man United reveal – Keith Wyness

Former Aberdeen manager Keith Wyness disclosed that if Celtic does well in the Champions League, they could receive an additional

£5 million annually from their Adidas sponsorship.

The 66-year-old, who led Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004, also held executive positions at Everton and Aston Villa, and currently

operates a football advisory business that counsels elite teams, stated on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track

podcast that the Scottish Champions cannot afford to have more performances similar to their 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund last week.

After signing a five-year contract with Adidas in 2020, Celtic’s current agreement with the company is scheduled to expire in the

summer of 2025. However, it is thought that both sides are eager to reach an extension.

They will then follow in the footsteps of teams like Manchester United, who have a deal with Adidas wherein they will receive £10

million less for each season in which they are unable to qualify for the Champions League.

Celtic could receive uplift on Adidas deal after European success

Wyness thinks Celtic will probably agree to comparable performance-based conditions in their next Adidas contract, which will allow

them to get an extension on their existing agreement.

“That’s one that I have never had to negotiate, so I’m unclear as to how much that would be,” he said on the Football Insider Inside

Track podcast.

However, I would estimate that there would be a difference of maybe £5 million annually.

“That’s one that I have never had to negotiate, so I’m unclear as to how much that would be,” he said on the Football Insider Inside

Track podcast.

“But my guess would be something like probably a £5million difference possibly a year.

“I could be wrong on that, but I think it’s going to certainly be based on results and based on Man United potentially losing

£10million.

“I think Celtic if they do well in the Champions League and those sorts of areas, which they didn’t do in the last game, then they

could get those sorts of bonuses.

“I believe it will be bonus-related, possibly with a slight increase on the fundamentals.

“It’s encouraging for them, but they need to do better than that—7-1 was a bit of a hammering.”
