Brendan Rodgers’ goal glut has made him stand out as an overlooked Birmingham City whizzkid.
Ronan Hale is a name that many Birmingham City supporters will be familiar with.
Despite scoring a lot of goals for the club’s youth levels, the Irish striker was never called up to the main squad. Managers Gary Rowett through Gary Monk disregarded the calls for Hale.
In 2019, Hale returned home permanently following a first loan stint with Derry City during which he scored seven goals. The striker, who was born in Belfast, joined Crusaders to play with his brother Rory, who had previously played for Aston Villa in this area.
Hale frequently found the net when playing for Crusaders, St. Patrick’s, and Larne, but not with the same regularity he found at Cliftonville. When Hale and his brother were reunited in 2022, he scored goals for two seasons straight.
After scoring 18 goals in his debut season with Cliftonville, he only managed 14 in just 25 games during his second season. At the age of 26, Hale—who has acknowledged experiencing homesickness throughout his time at Blues—was prepared to return to Ireland.
Ross County of the Scottish Premiership ultimately prevailed in the competition to acquire Hale, and he has had a prolific start to his career. People are talking after seven goals in 11 games, including a penalty against Celtic just now.
“His life in Scotland has started off wonderfully,” Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers remarked. He has served the team as a tremendously useful reference.
He came over at a respectable age and with solid experience, so it’s clear that he did well back home in Cliftonville. And he has demonstrated his ability to score goals here, as evidenced by his goal against Hearts, which was a fantastic finish.
Now that the striker is changing his international allegiance, Rodgers—a patriotic Northern Irishman—has a stake in Hale. Hale expects to play for Northern Ireland shortly after having represented the Republic of Ireland in his youth.
