49ers plot Leeds move to sign versatile free agent with 32 career goals

Leeds United are apparently looking to buy a flexible midfielder at a moderate cost, following a recent injury issue in Daniel Farke’s midfield.

Leeds Transfer News

In addition to Ethan Ampadu’s injury, Ilia Gruev’s absence has left Farke with limited alternatives in the middle of the pitch, hindering the Whites’ pursuit of Championship promotion. The Yorkshire club revealed the midfielder’s operation, following the announcement that Ampadu will miss up to 10 weeks due to his own ligament problem.

Without the heart of their midfield, Elland Road have struggled in their last two games, with Illan Meslier at the centre of attention after potentially throwing away all three points against early promotion contenders Sunderland last time out.

However, with a lengthy season ahead of them, the 49ers Enterprises appear to be fully aware of the need to reinforce even outside of the transfer window, as evidenced by recent injuries, which could see one veteran midfielder join.

According to Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post, the 49ers are considering a Leeds bid to sign Cheikhou Kouyate, who became a free agent after his Nottingham Forest contract expired in the summer.

Kouyate, a versatile player who can play defensive midfield, central midfield, and centre-back, is still a viable option despite his limited Premier League experience. Furthermore, because the transaction would not include an exorbitant transfer fee – or any money at all – Leeds would be pursuing a risk-free alternative.

“Great” Kouyate may be a good move from Leeds.

While they might wait until the January transfer window, Leeds could make a savvy move by signing free agent Kouyate to alleviate the concerns brought by Gruev and Ampadu’s injuries. Having played for West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace, the 24-year-old has scored 32 goals for both his club and nation.

Former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper praised Kouyate after his comeback from injury in 2023, stating that he is a contender for a starting position. Cheikhou has extensive Premier League experience and a strong presence in the locker room. He’s a fantastic character, a great guy who is not only happy but also committed. He’s a true man’s man in terms of leadership.”

Kouyate, who is nearing the end of his career, may add Championship promotion to his remarkable resume if he joins Leeds United.
