Watford will get best out of Jebbison says Cleverley

Is it really fair to judge a player on 243 minutes of football?

Daniel Jebbison has started twice for Watford since coming on loan late in the summer transfer window, and he has also made three substitute appearances.

The 21-year-old was rated highly enough by Premier League club Bournemouth that they signed him from Sheffield United at the end of last season, giving him two Premier League appearances and one Carabao Cup before moving to Vicarage Road.

It is fair to argue that the striker has yet to catch the imagination of Watford fans, but with so little evidence to go on, Jebbison deserves more time to impress.

“He needs to find his rhythm, and he has a really fast tempo that he needs to be able to repeat.

“In every training session, I’ve seen him finish with both feet, and against Middlesbrough, we saw him be a little unrefined with his hold-up play and passing.

“For many young players, it’s not a skill issue, but rather a concentration one.

“I told folks on Saturday that he executed acts one, two, three, and four wonderfully, but the fifth one let him down.

“If we’re sitting here after ten or fifteen performances and he still needs rhythm, I might be concerned, but I’m not right now.

“I have stated that I do not read comments, but I can understand why there may be a few complaints.

“He has superior technique than most people realize.

“If anything he is probably guilty of trying too hard at the moment, but I’m confident we will get the best out of him.”

With Watford’s current formation and the roles assigned to each player, can a No.9 achieve 20 goals?

“I think they could, yeah,” Cleverley replied.

“There is one piece of data that I haven’t examined yet, and I need to.

“I know we have one of the biggest number of significant opportunities in the division, as well as a large number of final-third entries.

“Our attacking production has been quite good.

“What I’m going to look at is how many of those big opportunities are falling to our No. 9s. I need to look into that.

“Our No. 9 may not be able to score 20 goals every season, but I am confident that he can score 15.

“We all have to work hard to keep creating the chances, but also to give the players the best conditions to finish them in.”
