Sunderland captain Corry Evans

After three seasons at Sunderland, Corry Evans was released in the summer of 2024. Some fans may be surprised to see him join a League Two team.

Evans left Sunderland in the summer after missing much of the 2023/24 season due to an injury sustained in January 2023. His age and lack of recent playing time made it difficult for him to get a new contract.

After months of being without a club, he just signed a contract with League Two Bradford City until January, much to the disappointment of many Black Cats fans.

Bradford appear to have made a decent signing, as the 34-year-old has extensive experience in both the EFL and on the international scene, and he captained Sunderland in the Championship less than two years ago.

Sunderland may be paying more attention to Bradford City following Corry Evans’ transfer.

Evans may have only played three seasons at the Stadium of Light, and he was injured for about half of them, but he is still well regarded in Sunderland.

The Northern Irish midfielder was Sunderland’s club captain, and he played a key role in the team’s eventual promotion back to the Championship following a tough few years in League One.

In 2022, he captained the team to victory over Wycombe Wanderers in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium, cementing his legacy as the man who guided the club back to the Championship.

He was a key player for them in the Championship prior to injury in January 2023, and it’s clear that he’s well thought of at the club. He was given the chance to say farewell at the end of the 2023/24 season after recovering from injury to feature against Millwall, Watford, and Sheffield Wednesday in the latter weeks of the campaign.

He performed admirably at a tough era for Sunderland, and some Black Cats fans will be keeping a careful eye on how he does in League Two with Bradford City.

It’s surprising to see him descend to League Two, since you’d expect him to be capable of playing at least at League One level, so it appears to be a coup for the Bantams.

Sunderland fans will undoubtedly wish their former captain the best of luck as he resumes his career after a year away from the club, hoping that he can recover the form he shown previous to his injury in 2023.

Corry Evans is a terrific addition for Bradford City.

With a plethora of Championship experience, Evans’ acquisition by a League Two club is a great statement of ambition, and it’s also a low-risk move for Graham Alexander’s team.

Evans’ contract only runs until January, so if he doesn’t perform well or gets injured, they may dismiss him and not have to pay his wages, but if he impresses, his term can be extended.

Evans has led Championship teams and has 72 international caps, so his experience will be vital to Bradford as they seek promotion from League Two following six seasons in the EFL’s basement division.

The Bantams’ season has been a mixed bag thus far, with them just outside the play-offs, but if Evans’ move goes as planned, they will soon begin to climb the League Two standings.

Evans joining Bradford is a move that would have made their League Two opponents sit up and take notice, and the club will be hoping it pays off in the months ahead.
