Scales and Johnston share epic Ireland moment as forgotten friend finds feet with a stunner – Celtic news bulletin
Mike Johnston, Liam Scales’ former teammate, went straight over to congratulate him after Scales was named one of Ireland’s heroes
in their victory over Finland in Helsinki.
It happens while former teammate Hyeongyu Oh keeps scoring goals and Reo Hatate will have travelled nearly 30,000 miles NOT to
play for Japan. In the pivotal Nations League match, Ireland’s Scales scored the equalising goal first, and Robbie Brady’s late winner
left the resilient travelling supporters in a state of shock. Heimir Hallgrimsson hasn’t been too fond of him lately, but he made his
fourth start in Finland and performed admirably.
A video of the full-time celebrations was posted on Irish social media, where Scales was shown having a great time with West Brom
winger Johnston, who was an unutilised substitute during the win. After exchanging heartfelt hugs and amusing jokes, Scales accepts
congratulations from Adam Idah, his current club teammate. Scales celebrates by shouting “come on!” to the camera as they go
through the tunnel, but his teammate Chiedoze Ogbene interrupts with, “come on you boys in green!”
Elsewhere during the international break, Hyeongyu Oh is steadily finding his feet since leaving Parkhead and he was one of the South
Korea scorers in their 2-0 win over Jordan. The former Hoops striker is now a super sub for club and country, scoring three times off
the bench in his last three games for Genk, and replicated that form on the international scene.
He drove in from the left, chopping inside his man and driving a low finish into the bottom left corner to seal the win.
Elsewhere midfielder Reo Hatate has travelled an astonishing 17,608 miles within the last month….without kicking a ball for Japan.
And when he returns to Glasgow next week ahead of the top of the table clash with Aberdeen, he will have flown over 5,000 miles
longer than the distance around the world.
The Hoops star was an unused sub as Japan continued their impressive World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win in Jeddah
against Saudi Arabia this week. He at least made the bench this time after not even being named as a sub in last month’s double-
header wins against China at home and away in Bahrain.
Hatate last played for Japan in June in a 5-0 win over Myanmar in June, but has been completely snubbed by manager Hajime
Moriyasu since, despite naming him in all his squads. And he’s travelled enormous distances for nothing, unlike Celtc teammate
Daizen Maeda who is a key player for Japan and came on as a sub in Saudi.
Last month, Hatate travelled from Glasgow to Tokyo for Japan’s 7-0 win over China in Saitama, which was 5,790 miles. He then flew
another 5,179 miles to Bahrain to watch Japan win 5-0 in Riffa from the stands before flying for another 3,398 miles to return to
Glasgow.
This month, Japan based themselves in Jeddah for their first qualifier and Hatate jetted another 3,241 miles to get to the Saudi city.
As of right moment, he has flown 17,608 miles without taking a single step. Furthermore, Hatate will receive additional flight miles
this week. It will be a further 5,995 miles on Tuesday when he returns to Japan for the pivotal match against Australia in Saitama.
Hatate will then travel 5,790 miles by air to get back to Glasgow.
This indicates that he has flown 29,393 miles in the past month, which is significantly more than the 24,901 miles that are used to
determine the circumference of the world. After implementing his new 3-4-2-1 tactics, Japan’s manager Moriyasu was only focused on
securing another victory. We use what is known as an offensive back three system, but the players also shown their ability to defend
because
“My focus is on connecting good defending with fast attacking.”
