“Last Season Was a Tough Year for Me”: West Brom Star Josh Maja Reflects on Challenges and New Beginnings

West Bromwich Albion forward Josh Maja has opened up about the difficulties he faced last season, admitting it was one of the toughest years in his career. The 25-year-old striker, who joined the Baggies on a free transfer during the summer transfer window of 2023, revealed that personal and professional challenges weighed heavily on him before his recent turnaround in form.

Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Maja reflected on the struggles he endured while playing in France for Bordeaux and later Stoke City, where a combination of injuries and inconsistent form saw his performance dip. Maja, known for his goal-scoring prowess, found it difficult to reach the heights he had previously achieved, with the pressure to perform mounting week by week.

“Last season was a tough year for me, both mentally and physically,” Maja admitted. “There were moments where I felt like things weren’t going my way. Injuries set me back, and it was hard to find my rhythm. It felt like I couldn’t get any momentum, and that was frustrating.”

Maja’s time in Ligue 1 had promised much when he first arrived from Sunderland, but as the seasons wore on, his opportunities dwindled, leading to loan spells back in England. His temporary stint at Stoke City saw some glimpses of his talent, but it wasn’t enough to revive his form fully.

Maja’s move to West Brom signaled a fresh start, and under the guidance of manager Carlos Corberán, the Nigerian international has slowly regained his confidence. With the Championship being a familiar territory, Maja is keen to prove that his dip in form was merely a blip.

“This summer was about resetting and finding a club that believed in me,” Maja said. “West Brom has given me that chance, and I’m grateful. I feel like I’m getting back to my best. It’s still early days, but I’ve got the belief, and I feel like the tide is turning.”

Corberán has already shown trust in the forward, integrating him into the starting lineup and giving him the time to find his feet. Maja’s technical abilities, paired with his vision and goal-scoring instincts, have made him a valuable asset in Albion’s push for promotion.

The early signs have been promising, with Maja beginning to make his mark at The Hawthorns. Fans have responded positively to his work ethic, and while the goals are starting to come, it’s Maja’s overall contribution to the team that has garnered praise.

“I’ve always believed in my ability,” Maja continued. “Even when things weren’t going well, I knew I had the talent to bounce back. Now, it’s about staying fit and focused, giving everything for the team. The fans here have been great, and I want to repay their faith in me.”

West Brom’s hopes for the season rest heavily on players like Maja rediscovering their form, as they aim to climb the Championship table and return to the Premier League. The club’s attacking options have been bolstered by Maja’s arrival, providing a much-needed boost to the squad’s depth.

As the season progresses, Maja is determined to put last year’s struggles behind him. With his confidence growing and the support of a new environment, the striker is focused on taking his game to the next level and helping West Brom achieve their ambitions.

“I know what I’m capable of, and I’m working hard to show that to the fans, the club, and to myself,” Maja said with conviction. “Last season was tough, but I’m ready to move forward. This is a new chapter, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

For West Brom, Josh Maja’s resurgence could be a key factor in their promotion chase, as the tide seems to be turning in favor of both the player and the club.
