£7m West Brom star could return to action next week amid Carlos Corberan’s new update

According to the Express and Star, West Brom striker Daryl Dike may make a brief debut for the U21s against Swansea City next week.

Since signing Dike in January 2022, West Brom has hardly had the opportunity to use the American star.

His tenure at The Hawthorns has been marred by injuries, particularly two rapid ruptures of the achilles tendon. As a result, he has

only made 32 appearances over the course of two and a half years, contributing eight goals and one assist to Carlos Corberan’s team.

There have been progressively better bulletins on his condition as he has made his way back on the protracted path to recuperation.

According to recent remarks made by Corberan, Dike appears to be close to making a comeback to the field.

According to The Express and Star, there is a “outside chance” that the West Brom striker may make a brief appearance for the U21s

against the Swansea City youth team the following week.

Although the 24-year-old is getting close, Corberan was eager to emphasise that he still needs to play for the younger Baggies a few

times before being considered for a first-team spot.

The West Brom manager stated, “He is currently training with a team, but with the U21s, so his first step to come back…we have been

specific.”

Having worked his way back on the long road to recovery, there have been increasingly positive updates on his situation. Now, amid

fresh words from Corberan, it seems Dike isn’t far away from returning on the pitch.

The Express and Star states there is an ‘outside chance’ that the West Brom striker features briefly for the U21s against Swansea City’s

youngsters next week.

Although the 24-year-old is getting close, Corberan was eager to emphasise that he still needs to play for the younger Baggies a few

times before being considered for a first-team spot.

The West Brom manager stated, “He is currently training with a team, but with the U21s, so his first step to come back…we have been specific.”

Then, he worked with us on analytical exercises but not on real-world games. During the international break, they will arrive.

“Before he can play with the first team, he must do at least one game with the B team.”

A welcome return

A video of the full-time celebrations was posted on Irish social media, where Scales was shown having a great time with West Brom

winger Johnston, who was an unutilised substitute during the win. After exchanging heartfelt hugs and amusing jokes, Scales accepts

congratulations from Adam Idah, his current club teammate. Scales celebrates by shouting “come on!” to the camera as they go

through the tunnel, but his teammate Chiedoze Ogbene interrupts with, “come on you boys in green!”

As such, the plan to ease him in with U21s outings seems a sensible one.

Looking forward

With an outing late next week a possibility, West Brom will be excited to have Dike back in the fray sooner rather than later. It seems

likely that substitute outings will await him when he is back in the first-team.

They could start to come in the time between the end of this break and the start of the next one in mid-November.

By that point, the Baggies will be hoping they have a solid place in the Championship automatic promotion picture. A falter in form in the three games before the break saw Corberan’s side slip to 4th but it has still been a strong start to the campaign.
