Swansea City confirm major exit after Stoke draw as Leeds United to get Jurgen Klopp boost

Remarkable arrivals and departures in the Championship during the international interval.

Swansea City has announced Paul Watson’s shocking resignation as sporting director.

Watson, who joined Swansea over eighteen months ago after a fruitful five-year tenure at Luton Town, watched Swansea secure a 0-0 draw with Stoke City in the Championship on Saturday. There had been no indication of what was to come.

However, the team made an unexpected three-paragraph statement on Tuesday night, and fans are now waiting to hear how other tasks, like recruitment, will be handled.

“I would like to extend our thanks to Paul for his work during his time with us,” Chairman Andy Coleman stated. We hope he has the best possible future.

“The club will update regarding recruitment plans for the position in due course,” the Swans continued. Paul’s duties will be carried out by the current football department employees in the meantime.”

In addition to the loan additions of Nelson Abbey and Myles Peart-Harris, Swansea completed six permanent signings in the summer, including the attackers Eom Ji-sung and Zan Vipotnik and goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Supporters, though, were more taken aback by the decision’s timing than by it.

“Watson was unpopular among fans and was always going to struggle to get over that incredibly wasteful first summer,” stated Guto Llewelyn.

“But Swansea have to sort out their chopping and changing in this area because it’s led to a really inconsistent and disjointed transfer strategy with no clear plan.”

There’s more Championship action to follow, including the announcement that Jurgen Klopp will take over as Red Bull’s worldwide soccer director. Red Bull acquired a minority interest in Leeds earlier this year, and in what is reportedly one of the most profitable business agreements in EFL history, the company will sponsor the team’s front shirt until 2024–2025.

Beginning on January 1, the former manager of Liverpool will assume responsibility for a global network of teams, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls, “at the strategic management level” in his new position with Red Bull.

Leeds’ name and emblem are not going to change anytime soon, but the team’s uniform now bears the company colors, and it will be intriguing to see if and how relationships are used in the transfer market.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported: “There is no agreement for Red Bull to take up a larger investment position in the Elland Road club at this time, with chairman Paraag Marathe previously offering reassurance to supporters that changes to Leeds’ colours, badge and stadium would not be up for discussion given Red Bull’s history when marketing clubs they have a significant stake in.”

A little further on, club veteran Juninho has extended an invitation to Middlesbrough management to travel to Brazil to examine possible recruitment ties.

“Juninho is the current president of Serie B side Ituano and held a senior role at the Brazilian FA,” GazetteLive reported. With his extensive knowledge of Brazilian football, he might be able to tell Boro about up-and-coming players there. He was engaged in Boro’s 2021 attempt to sign Rodrigo Muniz, who went on to show his potential after returning to Fulham, despite the striker’s eventual failure during his loan stay with the club.

“Be it an official or unofficial relationship, Boro’s desire to broaden their global networks in an effort to sign up up-and-coming and possibly unknown talents that they can develop into stars might make a partnership with Juninho profitable. The encounter was proposed by the World Cup winner himself when he was recently in Teesside for a Red Radio program called “Evening With.”

The Stoke players took a brief holiday after the Swansea draw, but they returned to work this morning. After a busy two and a half weeks with the appointment of Narcis Pelach as head coach, they are back in for double training at Clayton Wood in preparation for their October 19 (3pm) home match against Norwich.
