Rangers told to complete prolific striker transfer as new Cyriel Dessers verdict emerges

Craig Moore has told Rangers to sign a “prolific striker in the January transfer window in a new Cyriel Dessers verdict.

The Nigerian striker has once again come in for criticism from fans and players alike after a mixed start to the season which has seen him score just three Premiership goals in his first seven matches.

Although Hamza Igamane has been utilised as a rotation option by Philippe Clement this term, Go Radio pundit Moore believes the Gers need a more “prolific” striker in their ranks to compete with Dessers for the starting role.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (8 October, 1:00:28) he said: “I think that definitely another striker is needed.

“I think it was needed in the previous window and I still believe from what I’ve seen that it’s needed in the next window for Rangers to be competitive.

“There’s a long way to go in the season, but Dessers, does he seem to be the type that can go on a run of a full season? He hasn’t shown that.

“He’s honest, but he doesn’t score enough for me and for a club like Rangers I think a striker needs to be scoring consistently more goals so it’s definitely an area that Rangers need to improve on.

“It might not be someone that is taking his place, but it needs to be someone prolific.”

Will Cyriel Dessers exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?

While Dessers has certainly improved across his time at Ibrox, the 29-year-old is by no means the perfect centre forward. He is a handful at the top end of the pitch, but his link-up play and finishing leaves more than a bit to be desired.

At times, the Nigerian international has been unfairly criticised, however, his record in the Gers’ biggest matches both this season and last shows that he isn’t going to be the man to fire Clement’s side to the Premiership title.

In Danilo and Igamane, the Gers have two alternative options that have shown plenty of promise, but the Moroccan youngster is still incredibly young and raw, while the Brazilian has had several fitness issues.

It won’t be easy for the Light Blues to find a prolific forward during January. Prices tend to be inflated in the winter window as teams are usually reluctant to let go of their best players.

However, the right signing could well be the difference between the Gers winning or losing the title this term. They made the mistake of not adding to their ranks last year and they cannot do the same again this time round.
