Ex-Leeds United star Raphinha weighs in on Marcelo Bielsa criticism with Elland Road ups and downs

Since taking over for Uruguay in May 2023, Bielsa has won 10 and drawn seven of his 20 games in charge of the team. They are only three points behind leaders Argentina and five ahead of Brazil in the World Cup qualifying standings. After eliminating Brazil, the former head coach of Leeds led La Celeste to the Copa America semifinal.

However, Luis Suarez has taken aim at Bielsa’s man management, igniting a discussion that has attracted players from the current national team to support the Uruguayan legend—who recently announced his retirement from international football—or to argue that the matter is better handled behind closed doors.

Speaking out against Bielsa’s tactics during the Copa America, Suarez specifically criticized the way he handled winger Agustín Canobbio, who only played one minute throughout the competition after helping his team score fifteen goals the previous season.

“There were situations in the Copa América that hurt me, but I chose not to speak about them out of respect for coexistence,” Suarez said to “De fútbol se habla así.” “I applaud Canobbio for his actions. He forced him to perform workouts with the players on several occasions when they were sparring, which is totally disrespectful. As a group leader, I spoke with Bielsa for five minutes, and all he said in return was, “Thank you very much.” If something goes wrong tomorrow, I beg that people not to take it out on the players. The entire group has been divided by Bielsa, even down to their training methods.

When questioned about Suarez’s claim, Federico Valverde of Real Madrid responded, “There are things that are true, and there’s no need to deny anything.” In this situation, honesty is crucial. However, it is also true that issues should be discussed with the relevant party and the team before going public. In the meantime, José Giménez acknowledged that Suarez’s statement had taken him by surprise and continued, saying: “There were things that we didn’t feel comfortable with, but we always supported and were 100% behind the coach.” All the games we played served as examples of this.”

It should come as no surprise that Raphinha is now being questioned about his impressions of the man who led Leeds to the Premier League in 2020. The winger made an impressive two-season transition to the English premier league following that year. Raphinha has already expressed his gratitude to Bielsa for helping him reach the international stage, while Bielsa once stated of the Brazilian that there wasn’t much more the coach could have done to improve his game.

Raphinha has expressed his gratitude for Bielsa’s role in helping him grow as a player, even though he also acknowledges that there were moments when their relationship was not harmonious.

“In my opinion, I think everyone has a difficult side to deal with, they have a very complicated side to dealing with people or situations,” the Barcelona star said to Globo. I suppose everyone is unique, in my perspective. Everybody has moments when they can’t handle anything. I just know what occurred to me at Leeds; I have no idea what goes on with the Uruguayan team.

Naturally, I had both wonderful and horrible times with him—we were like a large family, for instance. Since there were a lot of people in the house, there would always be arguments and both happy and sad moments. In my opinion, it always comes down to the same thing in football—whether it’s on a club or national team. There are wonderful times and bad moments in every instant.

“I personally had both good and bad times with him, but all I can do is feel thankful for nearly everything that I have become today. It was because of him that I am here today.

“I simply must express my gratitude for what I went through with him over the past two years. I lived with him for a year and a half. We had disagreements and altercations. We had many wonderful times as well as others that were more ugly than others. As I previously mentioned, I believe that not everything in your home is perfect.
