Brendan Rodgers names Celtic side to face Sligo Rovers

Brendan Rodgers has named his Celtic side to face Sligo Rovers.

The Parkhead club has traveled to Ireland for a midseason friendly with the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division club.

Rodgers had previously suggested that the fixture would give fringe and youth players extra playing time.

And the Celtic boss kept his word, selecting a widely rotated squad for the bounce game.

Scott Bain starts in goal, with Luis Palma, Luke McCowan, Yang, and Alex Valle all getting minutes from the start.

Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh make unusual starts at center back.

Alistair Johnston, Greg Taylor, and Cameron Carter-Vickers will all miss the match due to injuries.

“Ali won’t go with the international team, so that gives us a chance to recover him, because he’s been working very well,” Rodgers replied.

“Cam will start training later this week and have a solid week building up to Aberdeen. So that is good.

But on that I thought young Alex Valle did well (against Ross County). Especially the second half, his positioning was a little bit better. “But Greg, we hope he’ll be back, if not for Aberdeen, then not long after that.”

Rodgers had stated ahead of the trip, “I’ll be there.” I will be taking the team. That plan was in place several months ago.

“Obviously, we’ll have to recover some guys. However, a significant proportion of players will require games. So the group will be made up of both our first-team players and some of our younger players, as this is my first opportunity to see them.

“But, yeah, we’ll head over there; it’s always good to return home. And then we’ll get them ready for Aberdeen.

Celtic XI: Bain, Palma, Valle, Yang, McCowan, Nawrocki, Agbaire, Welsh, Bonnar, Dobbie, and Turley.

SUBS: Morrison, Rice, Robertson, Bonetig, McArdle, Dargie, Davidson, Cannon, Haddow, and Isiguzo.
