Tom Cannon opens up on private chat with Stoke City boss, Sam Gallagher partnership and those four goals.

Tom Cannon understands that it took him a few weeks to settle in at Stoke City, but he hopes to now begin to show fans what he’s all about.

Tom Cannon intends to give Stoke City supporters a peek of what he can deliver at full pace.

The 21-year-old striker joined Stoke on a season-long loan from Leicester on transfer deadline day in August, after not starting a game since late February. After three league games, he improved and scored four goals against Portsmouth.

The second goal of the night came after a run behind the defense on a through pass from striking partner Sam Gallagher. This is a classic Cannon goal that the new head coach, Narcis Pealch, hopes to see more of this season.

“The second goal against Portsmouth is my game in a nutshell, running off the shoulder, a first time shot or taking a touch and early shot,” he told reporters. “I hope it can continue.

“I believe the first few games at a new club are about settling in, getting to know the players, and getting to know the environment. A lot happened in the first several weeks, too. Now that things have settled down, we’re getting acclimated to the manager’s style of play, I’m getting to know the players, and they’re getting to know me. That everything takes time; it doesn’t usually happen immediately.

“It was nice to get chances to put the ball in the back of the net and I always back myself to take those chances.”

Cannon played one game for Steven Schumacher before the shift in the dugout. He got along well with the former boss and is buying into the current one, enjoying a private discussion after being brought off at half-time in a defeat at Middlesbrough just five days before the Portsmouth performance.

He stated: “I’ve been in his office a few times, including after the Middlesbrough game, to discuss what he thought of the game and simply chit-chat, him getting to know me and me getting to know him. It’s been good.

“I believe the relationship with the management is significant. When Schuey was here, I clearly got along well with him and all of his team, and the same is true again with this management. This manager has had a lot more one-on-one meetings, which I believe is beneficial, talking about life, things outside of football, and football and how he wants to play. It’s good; I believe it’s been quite useful.

“It’s various styles of play, and everything takes time, but the guys have believed in it since the first few days. It’s been quite positive. It’s just been a short period, but the club is moving in the right path.”

Gallagher has also taken credit for complementing Cannon following his recovery from a calf ailment sustained in preseason.

Cannon commented, “He’s been good. We got along really well off the pitch, and it showed on the pitch, and I’m confident that will continue.”

He said on the squad finding their feet: “It’s not something you can do once and expect to happen all the time. It’s something you have to work on every day, and I’m confident the more we do it, the better we’ll get. “We’re all quite enthusiastic.

Last Wednesday will be remembered in Stoke history, regardless of future events.
