Sunderland confirm Pedro Ribeiro as new assistant head coach

Pedro Ribeiro, a former coach at Porto, Olympiacos, and Fenerbahçe, has joined Sunderland’s backroom staff as Regis Le Bris’ new assistant.

Black Cats executives have been looking for a new number two for a while, and they want to make sure they sign the “right candidate,” as Kristjaan Speakman put it.

And Portuguese coach Ribeiro, according to Sunderland’s management and head coach Le Bris, is just that.

With 19 years of coaching experience under his belt, including stints at TSV 1860 Munich and Al-Ahli, the 38-year-old comes to the Academy of Light.

Additionally, he has managed Belenenses SAD, FC Penafiel, Académico Viseu, and Leixões in his native country.

Alessandro Barcherini will lead goalkeeping for Le Bris, while Michael Proctor will remain as first team coach. Ribeiro will work alongside Mike Dodds as an associate head coach.

Since Le Bris’ appointment in the summer, Sunderland has spoken with a wide range of potential assistant head coach candidates; but, they are willing to take their time to make sure that any new hire is a good fit on Wearside.

Pedro’s arrival at Sunderland is greatly appreciated, stated Sporting Director Speakman. To guarantee that we build on the outstanding progress we are making, we have been careful and meticulous in our search for the ideal individual for this position.

“Pedro’s background is quite amazing. In addition to being in line with our beliefs and playing identity, he can utilize these to offer an alternative viewpoint. We’re excited to assist him in acclimating to his new role and wish him luck.

“I’m honored to be a member of one of the most illustrious and forward-thinking football teams in English football,” Ribeiro declared. It’s a true honor, and I appreciate your faith in me. I’ll try my hardest to help and encourage our players as we all strive to meet Sunderland’s long-term objectives.
