‘Stalled’ for £300k – Guidi Reveals Celtic’s Costly Transfer Blunder

‘Stalled’ for £300k: Guidi Reveals Celtic’s Costly Transfer Blunder.

Speaking on Go Radio, Mark Guidi has provided yet another illustration of how Celtic’s financial hesitation has prevented them from
acquiring a talented young Scottish player. When talking about how Celtic and Rangers handle young Scottish players, the analyst was
blunt in his analysis of Aaron Hickey’s circumstances.

Regarding the choices that cost the team the full-back, Guidi remarked, “Celtic could have and should have signed Aaron Hickey, but

kind of stalled over an extra £300k or £400k.” Although Hickey, a former member of the Celtic academy, was easily acquired by the

team, they chose not to go above and above to satisfy Hearts’ demands. Instead, for about £1.5 million, the defender moved to

Bologna, where he flourished before landing a major transfer to Brentford in the English Premier League.

Guidi’s remarks are part of a larger narrative that shows how Glasgow’s Celtic and Rangers have occasionally undervalued native

potential. Self-described Celtics supporter Hickey may have been a valuable addition to the team, but he’s now playing in the Premier

League, where his market worth is estimated to be in the region of £20 million.

Hockey’s path serves as a case study for how minor financial decisions can cause athletes to elude Celtic’s control. He’s already a

seasoned Premier League defender at the age of 22, well above the club’s current budget. It seemed like Celtic thought they would just

invest a million dollars on the defender. His proactive decision to transfer from Celtic’s academy to Hearts, where he had a more direct

path to the first squad, has paid off handsomely, enabling him to continue to grow professionally.

The circumstance comes to mind other significant misses for Celtic, such as John McGinn, another Celtic supporter who ended up at

Aston Villa when the Hoops failed to meet Hibernian’s asking price. Both players have excelled after moving abroad, causing many

supporters to question the club’s reticence to invest in Scottish talent when it’s there in front of them.
