How Russell Martin summer signing has already become a ‘big’ figure in the Southampton dressing

How Russell Martin summer signing has already become a ‘big’ figure in the Southampton dressing.

Russell Martin had a busy summer at Southampton as he tried to assemble a team that could compete in the Premier League.

There were 14 first-team additions made throughout that time, and it’s safe to say that Southampton’s newcomers have had varying degrees of success.

Russell Martin appears to have made decent additions in Mateus Fernandes and Aaron Ramsdale, while Japanese right-back Yukinari Sugawara has been a revelation.

But thus far, Ben Brereton Diaz, Max Cornet, and Lesley Ugochukwu have all found it difficult to leave an impression.

Southampton will be hoping that striker Cameron Archer’s goal against Arsenal on Saturday was his first league goal since joining the team in the summer.

Aaron Ramsdale already proving his worth at Southampton

On Deadline Day, Martin’s goalkeeping dilemma was eventually resolved when a deal for up to £25 million was reached for Ramsdale.

Owner Sport Republic has backed Martin, who has impressed despite giving up 13 goals in his last four games. Martin was formerly an Arsenal player.

Ramsdale is a positive person who has experienced relegation with Sheffield United and Bournemouth, which might be very beneficial for Southampton this season.

The Athletic has now disclosed that the 26-year-old has become a key member of the Saints team, stating: “He doesn’t shy away from scrapping for points at the bottom of the table and he quickly established himself as a big character at Southampton and inside the dressing room.”

Ramsdale can assist in leading the team alongside Adam Lallana, Jack Stephens, and Flynn Downes, which is something Southampton will require huge personalities for.

The goalie had choices in the summer, as Wolves and Ajax were also interested in signing him, but in the end, Martin helped him sign with Southampton.

Ramsdale’s “admiration for Martin has only increased since joining and, despite the results, he has loved playing for — and being at — the club,” according to a story from The Athletic.

Martin is an excellent man-manager, and it’s said that the affection he has shown Ramsdale has been crucial in helping the goalkeeper rebuild his confidence following Arsenal’s dismissal.

Whilst it has been a challenging start to life at St Mary’s for Ramsdale, Southampton fans know his recruitment has substantially boosted their prospects of survival this season.
