Wrexham won 4-1 against Northampton to stay second in table

STEVE PARKIN praised the way his players reacted to conceding an equaliser against the run of play by putting Northampton Town to the sword at The Racecourse.

James McClean opened the scoring after eight minutes but although Cameron McGeehan levelled, top scorer Jack Marriott restored Wrexham’s lead before half-time.

There was no let up in the second period with Elliot Lee and McClean putting the game beyond doubt and assistant manager Parkin was pleased his side never took the foot off the gas.

“We talked at half-time about being ruthless and making sure that we created chances and put chances away again if we had the opportunity second half,” he said.

“The pleasing thing for us was the way we reacted to their goal.

“It was a poor goal to concede and the reaction at Birmingham and certainly at Stevenage was a little bit disappointing when we conceded but we didn’t let that affect us today.

“The lads got straight back on the horse and just went for it when they made it 1-1 which was really pleasing.

“That’s a good sign for us. The lads listened and reacted to not being too disappointed because you are not always going to keep a clean sheet.

“Opposition have got quality and if they do score, it’s how you react and I thought we reacted great to that.”

Man of the match Barnett had three assists and had a hand in the other goal while McClean also contributed an assist to his brace, but Parkin says it was a superb team performance.

“The finishing was great,” said Parkin. “It is nice to have some really good play but at the end of it there is a bit of quality that creates a goal.

“James has got a couple of goals and an assist and whilst Barney has done terrific which is great, overall it was a very good team performance.

“That is what we are about. It is great if you can get individuals playing well within that team unit which we are doing but first and foremost it is about the team.”

Wrexham remain second in the table with 20 points from the opening 10 games.
