‘The Numbers Are Dramatic’ – Stefan Borson: Celtic face financial issue after devastating blow

Celtic will always struggle to compete away from home in the Champions League with teams like Borussia Dortmund due of wage disparities.

According to finance expert Stefan Borson, the Scottish champions’ “big disappointment” versus Dortmund will be the scoreline, not the loss itself.

Celtic lost 7-1 against the Bundesliga side in their second group stage encounter, following a 5-1 triumph over Slovan Bratislava in their first.

Brendan Rodgers’ team still has to go to Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb, and Aston Villa in the competition, while they will host RB Leipzig, Club Brugge, and Young Boys at home.

Celtic to continue struggling in Champions League away games.

Borson argued that Celtic should be able to compete in Champions League home games, but he feels they will continue to struggle away from home.

He told Football Insider, “There will obviously be a big disappointment on the back of winning the first game convincingly and then having the issue that they had against Dortmund.”

“However, the figures are dramatic. If you look at the wage bill, Dortmund’s is £270 million, while Celtic’s is £70 million.

“They will always have a problem in these kind of games.

“They may be able to perform well at home, but they will always struggle away from home.

“Their pay spend is comparable to some of the top teams in the English Championship. That is the fact.

“Whereas if you play for Dortmund, their wage cost is comparable to Tottenham or Arsenal. There is simply no comparison.

“Ultimately, we understand that the wage bill is a crucial determinant.

“The main disappointment for Celtic is the severity of the defeat rather than the fact that they lost that game away from home against the Champions League finalists from previous season.

“That’s just how it works. It is extremely difficult to compete, and there is no quick remedy.”
