Mother played’very critical’ role in player refusing Wolves offer; club thrilled with failed move

Wolverhampton Wanderers did not sign Celta Vigo’s Hugo Sotelo, according to La Voz de Galicia journalist Pablo Carballo, as reported by Moi Celeste. The 20-year-old rose through the ranks of the La Liga club’s junior system before making his way to the first team in 2021. He made 28 appearances across all competitions, five of which came this season.

Last Monday, Sotelo extended his contract with the Spanish club until 2028. He thanked his mother, Fátima. Carballo claims she has played a’very crucial’ part in his career. He then discusses the Wolves’ attempt for the midfielder while he was still in Celta’s junior system. Five years ago, the Premier League side kept a close eye on a few Celta teenagers.

Sotelo was on this list, and the writer claims Wolves made a bid for him. His mother opposed the youngster’s move to England and refused their proposition. The Spaniard has gained attention when Claudio Giráldez was named Celta’s new manager in March. Moi Celeste says it’s ‘undeniable’ that he has ‘immense quality’, and there’s hope that Sotelo will stay at the club for a while. Celta appear thrilled, as this would not have happened if the player had accepted Wolves’ offer.
