Gary Lineker Match of the Day exit ‘spirals out of control’ as Alan Shearer explains ‘massive concern’

Gary Lineker has spoke further about his future as Match Of The Day host and joked that his situation is similar to Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Gary Lineker has stated that “there are bigger problems in the world” than discussions over his future on Match Of The Day. And the well-known broadcaster has humorously linked his situation to the massive contract issue at Liverpool FC.

The BBC denied last week that an announcement was imminent about its highest-paid talent, who is under contract until the conclusion of the football season.

Lineker, 63, jokingly compared his situation to that of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whose contracts expire in the summer.

“I believe there is one significant difference: Liverpool fans care deeply about those three,” added the former England striker.

“It’s been a strange few days, as you know, Trent, Virgil, and Mo. My contract is coming to an end in the summer, so it’s reasonable to have conversations at some time, and they’ve only just begun.

“I’m not sure why it all got out of control. All is fine.”

Lineker disclosed that his co-presenters, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, are in a “similar predicament,” to which Richards said, “What is more concerning is I’m 4-1 to replace you!”

Shearer stated: “That is a huge worry. “I will not sign my contract if you are the presenter.”

Lineker took over the flagship football highlights show in 1999, after his predecessor, Des Lynam, joined ITV.

He has been the BBC’s highest-paid on-air talent for seven straight years and is expected to earn £1.35 million in fiscal year 2023/24, according to the corporation’s annual report issued in July.
