Dermot Desmond in rare Celtic address as he reveals what he really wants from Champions League + talks Rodgers

In a rare interview, Celtic’s principal stakeholder, Dermot Desmond, expressed confidence in the club’s performance in the Champions League, despite a challenging week.

The Hoops defeated Slovan Bratislava 5-1 in their first encounter in the competition’s redesigned league round. With a perfect domestic record, confidence was high, but a 7-1 thumping of Borussia Dortmund has spurred soul searching about how they can compete at Europe’s highest level.

Celtic returned to Premiership action on Sunday, coming from behind to win 2-1 away to Ross County. The triumph was completed with goals from Alistair Johnston and Nicolas Kuhn.

Majority shareholder Desmond was playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship over the weekend and emphasised the need of a response in a rare address to manager Brendan Rodgers and the club in Champions League waters.

“I am very pleased,” he expressed to Sportsound. I believe we played terrific football. We had a good start and might have played poor football, but we actually played very good and exciting football.

“Unfortunately, we were not at our best on Tuesday, but I like what we’re doing, what Brendan’s doing, and I believe we have a terrific squad. I’d like to see some solid results at home and perhaps pick up a point or two away.

“I believe we’ve done incredibly well so far. It’s exciting to face eight distinct teams, four at home and four away, each with a different ranking. I believe it makes it more exciting for the club, its followers, and the wider public.
