Martin will be beginning to feel the pressure at Southampton after such a challenging start to the season, even though he performed admirably the previous season.
The Saints’ lone point came in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, another team that was just promoted. In the 95th minute, a deflected goal ruthlessly pegged them back.
Although Southampton fought valiantly in the 3-1 loss to Arsenal, Leicester City’s home game in the first match following the international break now has a lot riding on it in terms of Premier League survival.
Former Southampton defender Danny Higginbotham said on The 2 Robbies podcast that he believes Wolves, Leicester, and the Saints will all be demoted at some point.
Higginbotham clarified his assessment on Southampton, saying: “There’s a stubbornness there, or you could say it’s a belief in the philosophy that Russell Martin has.
“It’s that simple: when you get promoted, you have to adjust.”
Martin will not change at Southampton
Martin is a deeply moral boss who is passionate about his possession-based philosophy.
That has allowed him to advance as a manager in just five years, from League One with MK Dons to the Premier League with Southampton, and Martin won’t change.
Many people think this is foolish, and maybe they are, but there are a lot of doubts about whether you can succeed in the Premier League by playing this style with players who aren’t as good as most of your opponents.
If Southampton loses to Leicester at St Mary’s in two weeks, the evidence thus far would seem to indicate that you can’t, and Martin might not have much longer to prove he can turn things around.
