Birmingham City has made a number of significant mistakes over the years, despite the fact that things are going well for them at the time of writing.
In the early stages of the 2023/24 season, Blues performed well under John Eustace and appeared to be in a strong position following a positive ownership shift in the summer. However, new owner Tom Wagner and the board wanted to see a change in the squad’s style of play, thus Eustace was fired in October last year, despite the fact that his team was in promotion contention at the time.
Eustace is doing well at Ewood Park right now, and Birmingham is also thriving. To add salt to the wound, Eustace’s Blackburn Rovers were one among the sides that kept up at their expense. Despite his best intentions, Wagner’s start at St Andrew’s was awful, but that hasn’t tempered his desire to make Birmingham a prominent factor in English football.
If he can return the team to the Championship and compete at the top of the second division, all of this will be forgotten. Their 2023/24 season, however, was a huge disappointment for them, and we look at another major regret the team will have as we turn the clock back to 2017.
Redknapp was appointed in April 2017, and although losing his first game in charge at Aston Villa, he was able to steer the Blues to two victories after that, which was enough to retain them in the second tier. However, he had only coached three games, and despite his experience, it was unknown how his stint at St Andrew’s would play out.
