Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng shines in frenetic MTN8 final

He may have put the final exclamation mark on an emphatic MTN8 final, but rising Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng is not letting success go to his head.

The 19-year-old midfielder scored the Pirates’ third goal in a wild finish to the game that saw them named champions after entering as a substitute in the closing minutes of the trophy match against Stellenbosch FC. The debate surrounding the Pirates’ second goal similarly revolved around the young Mofokeng, who assisted by skillfully performing a short free kick, although from the incorrect place.

Abongile, the referee Steve Barker, the coach of Stellenbosch, was left furious and disappointed when Tom let the goal stand.Tom won the fight because he disregarded the game’s rules and permitted a free kick to be taken quickly closer to Stellies’ goal. The players from Stellenbosch objected to everything.

Taking his chance

Stellies threw all of their players forward after falling behind 2-1 with almost no time remaining, leaving them vulnerable at the back.

In a moment that he would cherish for the rest of his career, Mofokeng moved in to punish his opponents.

The humble Mofokeng was hesitant to accept much of the credit for the win when asked about his influence on the match.”I feel like I work for the team on top of the work of the players that started the match when I come in, but it’s not like they really trust me to come in the second half and make things happen. All of us were team members,” remarked Mofokeng.

“The players who got things going are the ones who wore down Stellenbosch so I could come in and do the easy stuff.”

Mofokeng clarified that he would do similarly if called upon from the bench. He has already been starting games and fulfilling expectations for the Pirates.

Hence, just because you start the game on the bench doesn’t mean you won’t play; you just need to be prepared.

“I am appreciative of my teammates’ assistance in my scoring.
